Description
This black female wolf came from the Bitterroot Valley in Western Montana. The asymmetrical mosaic was created with pieces of polished Montana Moss Agate, highlighted and outlined with Montana garnets. We collected the Montana Moss Agates from the ancestral Yellowstone Riverbed in Eastern Montana. The Montana garnets were collected in the Beaverhead area in Western Montana.

Montana Moss Agates are a semi-precious stone that formed from the silica that erupted from the Yellowstone Volcano. The Yellowstone Volcano’s eruptions caused massive lava flows and several feet of silica ash along the eastern front of the Rocky Mountains and in the Yellowstone River. The silica mixed with minerals giving rise to the beautiful colors; iron oxide created the yellow, red, orange, brown colors; and manganese created the black colors. The Montana Moss Agate is the only agate in the United States with an inclusion that looks like “moss”, and this is due to the shape of the crystal, it is a micro-crystal with no equal side. These stones are only found in Eastern Montana along the Yellowstone River.
